Dr. Carol Graham Shekhar, Ph.D.

Carol Graham Shekhar PhD - psychologist in delawareI earned my Doctorate in Counsleing Psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.  During that time, I pursued additional training in Neuropsychology at Coatesville VA Medical Center in Coatesville, PA., where I developed an affinity for working with veterans.

I was honored to be able to work with veterans again during my doctoral internship at the Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. There, I trained in Neuropsychology, Geropsychology, and Inpatient Psychiatry.  My passion for working with older adults, end of life, and coping related to medical illnesses began to flourish. That passion led me back to Philadelphia to work for a few years in an urban nursing home as a therapist, and later as Director of Behavioral Health.

Ultimately, I decided to pursue advanced training in Geropsychology, and was privileged to be selected for a post-doctoral fellowship housed in the Geriatric Psychiatry Division of Long-Island Jewish Medical Center.

In 2005, after finishing my post-doctoral fellowship, I worked as a Consulting Psychologist in Wilmington Delaware nursing homes. My clients were in nursing homes for both short and long-term stays, and struggled with a broad range of challenges including depression, anxiety, and health-related matters.

I expanded my practice to open my own office in Wilmington in the fall of 2012. Here, I began to develop a passion for learning how to help people with trauma histories because so many of these clients reported being in and out of therapy over decades with mediocre or poor results. I am actively engaged in studying the treatment of trauma. I am a certified Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner. I completed the Certificate Program in Traumatic Stress Studies through the Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute.

In the early years of my career as a Master’s level therapist, I provided counseling and outreach services to women struggling with domestic violence, and pursued a special interest in diversity issues. These experiences continue to inform my practice. I strive to create a safe therapeutic environment for anyone, inclusive of race, gender, sexual orientation.

On a personal note, I grew up in the Midwest. I came to this area about 25 years ago for graduate school and I love the East coast. I have two children and a fur-baby. If you watch my short video, you’ll get a quick glimpse of my youngest, years ago, with two of my grandparents. My grandpa has since passed, but my grandmother is aiming to reach 100. My favorite place to be is face-down in warm, blue water over a gorgeous Caribbean reef with a snorkel in my mouth and family by my side.
